How Celebrities Lose Weight and Stay Thin & Skinny - The Best Celebrity Diets

Updated on February 19, 2012

How do they do it? Celebrities seem to be able to lose weight and stay thin effortlessly, looking great in a bikini or evening dress. The reality is that they struggle with weight loss and maintenance too, otherwise, you wouldn't see so many Hollywood before and after weight loss stories. But, you might argue, celebrities have weight loss resources that the typical person doesn't have access to, right? They have personal trainers and special food plans that make it easy to lose weight and keep it off. That may be true, but they also use the same tried and true methods that the typical person does. Perhaps the difference between a celebrity and the typical person lies in the level of commitment to the goal. For a celebrity, appearance is essential for their career and therefore they're probably super motivated. You too can achieve weight loss like a celebrity. All it takes is one of these top celebrity weight loss diets and your motivation.

Top Celebrity Diets and Weight Loss Plans

Weight Watchers: Jennifer Hudson, Jenny McCarthy, and Sarah Ferguson all famously lost weight using the Weight Watchers diet plan. The main component of Weight Watchers is their proprietary point system. Each participant is alloted a certain number of points for each day. They then simply select foods that stay within that point value during the day. The benefit of the Weight Watchers plan is that a participant can eat whatever they like, as long as they stay within their point limit for the day. If there's a celebration planned, you can simply eat fewer points earlier in the day and then you'll have the points left to splurge on a glass of wine or a dessert later on. The disadvantage of Weight Watchers is that you need to count the point value of what you eat each day. Portion sizes are important since they play into the points value so you need to be very careful not to take too large a serving. It can also be very disruptive and tedious to keep track of point all day long. After paying a registration fee of about $40 you'll pay about $13 per week.

5 Factor Diet: Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Eva Mendez, and Alicia Keys are all said to have followed the 5 Factor Diet made popular by Harley Pasternak. The program consists of diet and exercise with 5 meals a day, 5 days of exercise a week for 25 minutes each time, and 1 free day to indulge. Each meal must contain 5 key ingredients, protein, healthy fats, healthy carbs, fiber, and a sugar-free beverage. His book explains the principles. Or, you can spend $120 on the complete success system, which includes a quick start guide, DVD, diet plans and more. Finally, for $4 per week, you can join 5 Factor for a customized meal plan, recipes, and workout tips. Many celebrities have had success with this plan to it seem like one worth trying. The cheat day seems great too!

Tracy Anderson Method: Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Scarlett Johansson have all reportedly followed the Tracy Anderson Method, which includes a diet and exercise plan. The diet is low in carbohydrates, eliminating all bread, pasta, and white carbs while including lean proteins and vegetables to the tune of 1400 to 1600 calories per day. The plan also includes 100 minutes per day of intense cardio workouts. Using light weights, no more than three pounds, you do an hour long weightlifting routine followed by 40 minutes of cardio dance. Tracy Anderson sells DVD's of her workouts but her diet plan is expensive to sign up for at $200-$500 per month. Instead of signing up for such an expensive program, following a diet consisting of lean proteins and vegetables will achieve the same benefit. Just be sure to watch those portion sizes!

Atkins Diet: Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Zita Jones, and Bill Clinton have all followed the low carbohydrate Atkins Diet. The premise of this diet is to reduce carbohydrates to the point where your body begins burning fat for energy instead of carbs. The benefit of this diet is that you can eat as much as you want of the allowed, low carb foods and there's no need to count calories. However, counting carbohydrates is necessary and can be tedious. All in all, this diet is inexpensive, requiring only the paperback book and a few hours of reading to get started. It's also easy to follow for most lifestyles and when eating out. And best of all, it really works!

The Eat Clean Diet: Angelina Jolie, Halle Berrie, and Nicole Kidman have all reportedly followed Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet. This eating plan isn't really a diet but rather a lifestyle change. It consists of eating only whole, unprocessed foods prepared in healthy ways and advocates eating five to six mini-meals each day. There are no calorie, carbohydrate or fat guidelines. One must simply eat fresh, whole foods such as whole grains, fresh and frozen vegetables, fruit, and lean proteins. There are several books written by Tosca Reno that describe the eating plan and provide recipes. Tosca Reno is a 50 something year old who famously reshaped her body at age 40 by eating clean and lifting weights. She then went on to compete in figure competitions and write books on the topic. Very inspirational!

Cleansing Diets: Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, and Demi Moore are all said to have followed the Master Cleanse. This cleansing plan consists of drinking a mixture of fresh squeezed lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayanne pepper throughout the day whenever you're hungry. The diet also includes laxative teas or a salt water flush twice a day and continues for ten days. With no food and six to twelve glasses of the cleansing drink each day, one is bound to lose weight. Although fasting has been around for a long time and is reportedly beneficial for a number of health conditions, continuing this cleanse for longer than 10 days or going on it repeatedly can be harmful due to a lack of essential nutrients like protein.

Stay Motivated to Lose Weight

Now that you've picked a diet plan, how do you stay motivated? Try these tricks to keep yourself on track:

  • Buy a pair of jeans or a bikini in the size you want to get down to. Keep it out somewhere so you can see it and periodically try it on.
  • Tell several close friends and your family that you're following a weight loss plan. Tell them your goal and keep them posted about how you're doing.
  • Post pictures of women who are motivational to you somewhere noticeable like on your closet door or in your bathroom.
  • Find a friend to join you on the diet as well as for workouts.
  • Attend weekly meetings like the type offered through Weight Watchers.
  • Set short term goals and decide how you're going to reward yourself for hitting them. Ideas might be buying yourself a new outfit or taking a special trip.
